THE BPCL PETROCHEMICALS JOURNEY
In keeping with the “Make In India” Vision of the Government of India, we are proud to be the first Oil Company in India to venture into the petrochemical segment of Acrylates and Acrylic Acid.
At present, the end-users of these petrochemical products are totally dependant on imports. The Propylene Derivative Petrochemical Complex, which was dedicated to the nation by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on 14th February 2021, was built at the cost of Rs 6,000 crore. The complex has an Acrylic Acid Unit, Acrylates Unit & Oxo-Alcohol Unit of world scale size and capacity and will save approximately Rs 4,000 crore annually, in foreign exchange due to import substitution. It has the manufacture capacity of 329 KTPA of Acrylic Acid, Butyl Acrylate, 2 Ethylhexyl Acrylate, 2 Ethyl Hexanol, Normal Butanol and Iso Butanol from Polymer Grade Propylene.

Preparation:
Isobutanol is produced by the carbonylation of propylene. Two methods are practiced industrially, hydroformylation is more common and generates a mixture of isobutyraldehydes, which are hydrogenated to the alcohols and then separated. Reppe carbonylation is also practiced.
2-ETHY HEXANOL (Octanol) is a clear, colorless liquid, soluble in most organic solvents used as low volatility solvent and has got natural plant fragrances. It is starting material for the manufacture of plasticizers, lubricants and other chemical products such as raw materials for paints and coatings.

Acrylic Acid (propene acid) is a clear, colorless, corrosive, and flammable liquid that has an acrid/pungent small and is miscible with water, alcohol, ether, benzene, chloroform, and acetone.
