15th September 2022, fuel retail industry in India, saw one of the rarest of rare feet, as our dealer M/s. T. Rajagopala Iyengar & Son in Dindigul, Tamilnadu, completed 125 years, first as a kerosene agent and later as automotive fuel retailer, which is a landmark in the city.
Before the turn of 20th century, Kerosene lamps seemed to have taken over coconut, punna and marotti oil lamps for lighting and kerosene selling activity, led to an economic and cultural revolution, as improved lighting led to improved productivity as factory workers laboured on into the night.
When automobile started powering the mobility in India, motorists often filled automobile fuel tanks using the ‘Drum and Measure’ method. Gasoline, stored in bulk steel drums, would be gravity-fed into gallon cans, which were then poured directly into vehicle tanks, through funnels.
In 1930s, India saw the concept of ‘Drive-In’ Fuel Station. Since, then fuel retailing have brought innumerable technological advances and re-defined the way we buy fuel.
Four generations of M/s. T. Rajagopala Iyengar & Son have been part of this journey, with a mission to serve their customers with the latest technology and assured & impeccable service.
To mark the monumentous day, Pushp Nayar, Head Retail (South) and other senior officials from BPCL felicitated Sudarshan, the great grandson as a mark of gratitude for their service to society.
