Opt out of LPG Subsidy- Message from Director (Marketing)

Opt out of LPG Subsidy- Message from Director (Marketing)Dear Friends,

You must be aware that LPG is a clean fuel and also the most preferred fuel in our country. What probably you may not be aware is that even today, 36% of our fellow countrymen are deprived of the benefits of using a clean fuel. These families are subjected to a high level of indoor pollution because they use polluting fuels like wood, coal, charcoal or animal waste for cooking.

According to the World Health Organization, approximately 1.3 million people in India die prematurely each year because of exposure to household air pollution (HAP), making it the second biggest killer after high blood pressure. The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in a recent study noted that 27.5 % of under-five infant mortality in India is because of HAP.

One solution to prevent household pollution (HAP) is making Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), a clean fuel available to all.

While we produce LPG in India, it is not sufficient and hence we need to import 35% of it to meet the current demand in the country and this is at a huge cost. LPG is also a highly subsidized commodity and the subsidy amount during 2013-14 was a whopping Rs.46,000 crores. Any subsidy provided, translates to money out of the exchequer.  The same money if not given out as subsidy, can be used to make LPG available to those who are today deprived of using it.

At BPCL, we believe in ‘Energizing Lives’ and you have been associated with us over a period of time adding value to the organisation and stakeholders.  I am certain, you will not hesitate to join us in achieving the mission of reaching the clean fuel LPG to those who do not have it today.

I request each one of you who can afford to buy at market price to give up the subsidy entitlement which is only to the tune of Rs.3600/- for 7 cylinders or maximum Rs.6200/- for 12 cylinders for the whole year. Your gesture of giving up subsidy will truly be a gift of good health, particularly to womenfolk and children who are exposed to high levels of indoor pollution caused by fuels like coal, firewood, crop waste, etc.

An option to ‘opt out of subsidy’ is available on our websites www.bharatpetroleum.in and www.ebharatgas.com and also on the websites of other Oil Marketing Companies.

I call upon each one of you to come and join in the mission of reaching the clean fuel LPG to every home and Energizing Lives.

A big Thank You to all those who have already opted out - we truly appreciate your involvement.

Warm Regards,

K.K. Gupta
