Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) is a marine fuel introduced to comply with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) regulations aimed at reducing sulphur emissions from ships & vessels.
With the adoption in 2008, 1st January 2020 was given as the effective date for the 0.50% global sulphur cap for bunker fuels.
As of January 2020, ships are required to use fuels with a maximum sulphur content of 0.5%, significantly lower than the previous limit of 3.5%.
VLSFO is designed to be a more environmentally friendly alternative bunker fuel while still providing the necessary energy for vessels. Its composition typically includes a blend of high-sulphur fuel oil and low-sulphur components, ensuring it meets regulatory standards without compromising performance. The adoption of VLSFO marks a critical step in the maritime industry's efforts to minimize its environmental impact and contribute to global air quality improvements.

HF HSD is generally used for Naval applications and Fishing Vessels. BPCL’s HFHSD has a high gross calorific value and better Cetane Index; helps in reducing the engine knocking & improves combustion process. HFHSD produced in BPCL’s refineries conforms to ISO 8217 : 2017 (DMA) specifications and meets the BIS and MARPOL guidelines
